Midterm Deviled Eggs

This was a pretty normal week. Nothing unusual really, and today is the first day of spring, yay! On Wednesday I had a killer midterm. It was for World Religion, which is an awesome class, but basically I had to memorize everything for an eastern and a western religion. But I only had to write on one, I just didn't know which one till class started. I ended up writing on Buddhism. I felt pretty good about it, I'm hoping for a B.

Today we are having family over and when that happens I am in charge of the deviled eggs. Personally, I think I make the best deviled eggs, or at least everyone says so and I like them too. The secret is garlic and tabasco, lots of it. As far as eggs go, I hate them. But for some reason I love devilied eggs.

For my next sewing endeavor I will be making a short bath robe. Mainly I need to use up this old silk fabric. The print looks kind of medieval so it will be interesting.

March and the 90s

I hate March. You see, I love winter, the snow, rain, cold, thunder, lightning, and everything that goes along with it from power-outs to hot chocolate. I like spring too; I like wearing shorts and lemonade and watching my flowers grow and all that good stuff. But then there is March. Its like an in between month. Its not really winter because its not that cold or raining much. But its not quite warm enough to wear a tshirt. Its a dilly dally, wishy washy, namby pamby month. Its like the procrastinator of months. I just want it to be spring already, gosh!

Anywho, so I have been reliving my childhood lately, I have been watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I never thought about it before, but now that I look at it I am so glad I did not go to high school in the 90s. The clothes are terrible. Did anybody ever notice that Harvey Kinkle had two ear pearcings? EW! And I never realized how fake Salem looked. I am so glad the era of midriffs and mini-skirts is over. Only good thing was the Back Street Boys. I still like them, but their clothes were horrible. Oh! and the Ninja Turtles and Garfield. I used to wake up EVERY Saturday morning to watch them. Oh man, so glad I was a child in the 90s.

Interesting week. On wednesday I was driving home from english and I decided to take the back way home just for a change. Bad decision. I was driving on this really windy road, Newtown, and I got stuck in a hail storm. I had my windshield wipers all the way up and I still couldnt see. The hail was coming down so hard and loud I was afraid it would break the windshield. So I pulled over and decided to wait it out. Called my mom to let her now why I was late, I was yelling into the phone, the hail was coming down so hard. As soon as I hung up I looked up to see a car coming around the curve, a little too fast. The car went over the bank and missed me by very little. The car's mirror knicked my headlight. I should have peed my pants, I really should have, I am glad I didnt. I screamed though and remember my ears ringing afterwards. Anywho, it was still hailing extremely hard but I had to go see if the people in the car were okay. I ran to see that the two people in the car were fine, just in shock. The back side of their car was smashed in by a tree and there was a lot of glass. Luckily none landed on the passengers. I let them borrow my cell phone to call a tow truck and took a minute for my adrenaline to fade. Then, put my truck in 4 wheel (there was still 2 inches of hail on the road) and got the heck out of there. I am not sure what the lesson learned here is, maybe I should take the normal way home from now on and thank god for adrenaline and cell phones.

On a less dramatic note, I went to the Home and Garden Show at Cal Expo this weekend. I was unimpressed by the garden half of the show. Other than a few landscapers there wasnt much. Normally they have huge garden ddisplays and tons of flowers and growers. I wanted to buy an orchid but couldnt find one I was absolutely in love with. Instead, I found some pretty African Daisies and shirley Poppies. I also got a big yellow pot to plant them in. So I am pretty excited to see how those turn out.

Did anyone see the last office?!?! yay for Kevin!

Well I finished my skirt and I like it a lot. I would do a few things differently next time, but its still a sweet skirt. I started another simple, gathered skirt which I'll probably finish tomorrow. I had to file income tax this year which has turned out to be a pain in the butt. Also, I had lunch with my parents at Bella Verona on Missouri Flat this week and it was reeeaaalllyyy good. All I had was a sandwich and potato salad. But it just tasted really good, and I had a hard time deciding what to get. Plus, what my parents got smelled great. I cant wait to go here in the summer and eat lunch outside. I also get coffee sometimes here in the morning and although its about .20 cents more than starbucks its tastes a lot better. I get the tuxedo mocha and its way better than any mocha Ive had at starbucks. Plus I know that I am supporting a local, private business. And they have wi-fi!

This week was primarily uneventful. I only had two days of class, since my Tuesday class was canceled. So the week seems to have gone really fast. I love wet weather so at least I enjoyed the weather. On Friday night I went to see El Dorado's musical Miss Fortunate. Let me just say I was severely unimpressed. I was on the verge of sleep the entire second half. I am kinda mad I had to spend $10. I have to write a criticism essay on that so I look forward to shredding it. As far as learnign this week nothing prominent comes to mind. There just hasnt been much worth writing about or that has domincated my mind. In the essence that our blogs have a length requirement I will try to write more anyways.

About a year ago I wanted to learn to sew. Luckily I have a mom who knows pretty much everything about sewing. So I started making summer dresses and a few other pieces of clothing. I got to be pretty efficient and felt pretty good about my abilities. That fall though I moved away to college and was obviously without a sewing machine. But I returned home, and now I am trying to regain my skill. About a week ago I found this awesome wrap skirt pattern from the 1970s in a thrift store. It only cost me a quarter. Next, I went to WalMart (a place I despise and only go to in emergencies) to get my fabric. Unfortunately there are very few places that sell fabric in our area. I found this big flower/ paisley print that I liked for $1 a yard so I was happy about that. While I was in the POSMIC (Pieces of S*** Made in China) store all the old ladies stared at me like it was crazy that a young person was buying fabric. I smiled at them and they smiled back. Anyways, a few days ago I started my skirt. I cut out the pattern, which was a pain in the butt, and started putting it together. So far, all I have to add on is the waist band and the tie end and violla! Im pretty proud of this little piece of work Ive made and cant wait for the weather to get warm so I can wear all my clothes that I have made!

There are many times during everyday that I think to myself: hey, I should write that in my blog because I just learned something. Normally, I remember the better things and write about those. But this week there havent really been any better things. I guess this is partially due to the fact that I have been cooped up in my house for 5 days because of the snow. So I havent done much except drink cocoa and go sledding. There are so many reasons I love being snowed in, but one of the reasons is that I always get to do a lot of reading.

I have a ton of books, and I love going through them and finding one I havent read in many years. Each time I get a new perspective on the book because I am older. Its like finding an old cd that you havent heard in a while and remembering how great it is, or calling an old friend. Just feels good. This time I found a book of poems and quotations my grandma gave me when I was ten. I dont think I ever really took the time to read it. But I did this time and it was pretty good. I am not actually sure why my grandma gave it to me when I was ten because all the poems are pretty mature but I guess she wanted me to keep it for a while for such an occasion as this weekend. But the readings helped me reflect and seemed to speak to me, so it was a good experience.

I never expected to write about school because I find it dull, but my world religions class is pretty awesome. It is a 3 hour night class... but I never get bored. The teacher is a great lecturer and the material is so interesting. Its neat to walk away with a new perspecive on life after each class. So far we have covered Aboriginal religion, Hinduism, Judaism, Daoism, and Confusianism. All have their unique personalities but I am starting to realize that each have the same principals and basis. Also, our readings are pretty interesting; I cant help but relate them each to my life and this makes them all so meaningful. Out of all the religions I think Daoism is my favorite so far, it makes so much sense and I really value the unique view of Dao (too complex to write about in this little paragraph). What I also enjoy is the fact that the class isnt taken in a "this religion is right, and this one is wrong" perspective, but rather that all are as legitimate as the next one. I really think this is an important perspective and wish more people had to take this class. Because when it comes down to it, believe it or not, most religions tell the same stories, speak similiar morals, and most importantly realize that all human's souls have the same origin and want in life. I am so glad I got stuck in this class!

Another thing I have learned is not something I learned this week, but more like something I am reminded of daily, or sometimes hourly: my dog is the best. Lots of people say they have a great dog, or that their dog is extremely smart or soemthing but I just love my dog. He is a Jack Russel and is going on 13. He's getting old, so I worry, but that just makes every day more special. His name is Nacho and we got him when I was 6. I sware sometimes we can talk to each other, I can look right at him and he knows what I want and vice versa. He has true facial expressions and even grumbles like an old man. He truely helps me out in my times of need. At this very moment he is curled up between my hip and the couch. We have a mutual agreement where I spoil him and he spoils me. I look at Nacho and wonder how his life can be so simple but yet he is completely content. I guess thats why its called "A dog's lfe". My childhood would have been extremely different without him and I cant imagine not having a dog when I grow up. Dogs are awesome.

This week the most profound thing I have learned is the importance of spontaneity. In my reading I found a good quote that said something like: "God gave routine in place of happiness when needed". If you know any old people it may be true for them that the only reason they are sane is because they have a routine. Or sometimes you may find people who live alone who get caught up in the same routine. Well this kinda scares me. Because I find myself falling in the same habits weekly and I realize this so I'll have to change something up a bit. I dont ever want to be a person who has the same life every week. I need to be experiencing something new all the time. It may be good for older people to have habits and regular schedules but when younger people fall into it, well thats just sad. To me, it means they're waiting for something or procrastinating, or have just given up. So I find it to be important to be spontaneous everyday, do something random!

Another thing I just thought of that I learned this week is a little pet peeve I have. I HATE people who ride my butt when I am driving. Believe me, I am not a slow driver. 90% of the time, when driving alone, I am speeding. I admit that I like to go fast, its dangerous and someday I'll probably get whats coming to me. Thats why it pisses me off even more when someone is riding my tail extremely close. The fact that they want to go EVEN FASTER boggles my mind. You can only go so fast... Do they not realize the danger they are putting themselves in? Sometimes I wish I could slam on my brakes just to teach them a lesson. Of course I never do this, instead I drop my speed. Ill slowly get down to about 10 mph below the speed limit and I just bask in their frustration. MWAHAHAHA. Some people get my point and slack off, but some just dont understand and so I go even slower. I make a point to never be in a hurry so it doesnt bother me to go slow. Its probably not the best way to take out my anger but its better than speeding or slamming the brakes right?

I guess for being stuck in the house I did have a lot to say this week, I just have to force myself to think about it.

Week 2

Alright so another week gone by, I've had plenty of time to learn stuff, so let's see:

  1. The Super Bowl is what you make it.
  • I'm not a fan of football. I don't know the names of the teams, the sport casters are annoying, its slow paced, and I just don't associate with beer and couches. But I really had the best Super Bowl experience this year. I understand the rules and how the game works, so this year I actually sat down and watched 90% of the game. And about half way through I found myself actually caring. I shouted when stupid mistakes were made, and celebrated when good plays happened. I enjoyed being around my family, the clam dip was amazing (as usual), and Springsteen's pants weren't too tight. (But seriously what was with the knee dive crotch shot...) The commercials were alright this year, I didn't have any particular favorites. Driving home I felt very American and reflected on how I had learned to like something I hadn't liked before (but I still can't connect with beer and couches).
2. Donuts are super tasty.
So I was thinking that there really aren't many donut shops in the Placerville area. Yeah there is one off Placerville Dr. but that's it. It doesn't count when you go into Safeway or something and get a donut, its just not the same. I remember when the store in front of the Bell Tower sold amazing donuts. Every time we went to town my dad would take us in there and i would get a CHOCOLATE donut and sit in the window and watch people walk by. I thought I was pretty special. Also, doesn't it suck that Krispy Kreme went out of business? I went to Australia this summer and they have Krisy Kreme there and I freaked. They've even got them in the airports! I'm still jealous.

3. The Office is a stupendous, and extraordinary show.
Nobody will ever change my mind. I watch this show diligently every week and love it to death. It is the most unique show. There isn't a character that bores me and they each have their own, quirky personality. Even though Steve Carrell isn't my favorite, I still think he's a genius. Rainn Wilson totally owns and John Krasinski is amazing. They're all amazing. The writers though, I just am astounded by the hularious things they come up with for this show. I hope this show has 1ooo more seasons; I LOVE IT.

girly moment: I loved Jenna's dress at the Golden Globes!
